For
years after graduation, my high school Environmental Action Club gathered together on the night before Thanksgiving at the Great American Diner. Last year we even managed our own makeshift EAC reunion overseas when Nina, one of my EAC friends studying abroad in London, flew out to Pisa on the day after Thanksgiving. Though this year I entirely missed our annual gathering, we did our best to make up for it with a feast on the night before Christmas Eve. Much to our surprise, the menu, whose heading read, "Today's Special: 50% off the menu" literally meant just that! Suddenly the possibilities became endless. We could have steak. Or lobster. Or steak with lobster! The waitress had to come back several times before we were ready to order. Amongst the six of us, we managed to put in two orders for lobster (ravioli) and an order for steak along with a couple other fancy dishes. (Oh, San Fran Vodka Seafood Combo... yum.)

As everything was 50% off, we couldn't just stop at dinner, though the Great American, much deserving of its name, feeds portion sizes to last a normal American several meals (or a European for a week). Nonetheless, we persevered through dessert. Before the menus arrived, we were discussing some of the monstrosities Americans have created: fried oreos, death by chocolate, etc. A heart attack on a plate! When the menu arrived, it exceeded our expectations. The legendary "fried cheesecake" to which Jon had alluded was actually available along with flash-fried brownies served as a fondue complete with vanilla ice cream and corn-syrupy goodness in caramel, chocolate, and cherry flavors. We placed two orders for the table and prepared to die of cardiac arrest on the way home. I'm afraid to admit it was actually pretty delicious, albeit deadly. God Bless America.
